A qualified and certified sign language interpreter should be requested when communicating with a Deaf person who primarily communicates through American Sign Language (ASL). Having an interpreter present is necessary to ensure effective and clear communication between all parties, and ensures all information is accessible to everyone.

Unlike many other agencies providing services in Georgia, we strongly believe placing non-certified interpreters at assignments is not in the best interest for the very people we work with, especially members of the Deaf community. That’s why we only contract with nationally certified, independently contracted sign language interpreters. Each interpreter is nationally certified by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID). As certified members of RID, our interpreters are bound by RID’s Code of Professional Conduct, a necessary component in maintaining standards for individuals within the interpreting profession to adhere. This includes language mandating all information gained during the course of interpreting to be kept strictly confidential and impartial during the interpreting process.

If you are a certified sign language interpreter and are interested in working for GISN, please complete this form to have an interpreter packet sent to you for review.

In order to provide equal access, any place of public accommodation, including for-profit and non-profit organizations and government agencies, are required by the Americans with Disabilities Act and other applicable federal and Georgia laws, to provide auxiliary aids and services, such as sign language interpreters or captioning, as necessary to ensure effective communication for Deaf, DeafBlind or Hard of Hearing individuals.

Any place of public accommodation, including for-profit and non-profit organizations and government agencies, are required to adhere to the Americans with Disabilities Act and other applicable federal and Georgia laws. These laws require places of public accommodations to provide effective communication to Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing individuals. The cost of interpreting services cannot be passed to the Deaf, DeafBlind or Hard of Hearing individual as these costs are considered a part of doing business.

A sign language interpreter serves as a facilitator for effective and clear communication, enabling cross-cultural communication and accurately translating between voiced English to American Sign Language and vice versa.

All of our interpreters are certified by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), and are bound by RID’s Code of Professional Conduct , requiring confidentiality and maintaining the integrity of all messages exchanged.

At times, a team of two interpreters may be necessary to ensure effective communication is provided. Interpreting assignments can be mentally and physically demanding, especially if they are lengthy (e.g., lasting more than two hours) and/or complex (due to material covered or the amount of participants involved). Lengthy and complex jobs generally require an interpreting team of two interpreters that rotate at approximately 20-minute intervals. This is designed to ensure consistent and effective interpreting quality for your Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing employees and clients.

GISN reserves the right to determine if an assignment requires a team of interpreters on a case-by-case basis.

Due to the nature of the work performed during legal and medical interpreting assignments, these types of assignments are amongst the most complex of all interpreting assignments. Similar to having an interpreter in any other setting, the presence of qualified and properly trained interpreters in legal and healthcare settings is essential to fostering effective communication between all parties. The extensive benefits of using qualified and properly trained interpreters in these settings include increased satisfaction, fewer errors in communication and compliance with federal and Georgia civil rights laws.
